>What in the world should I be thankful for?

Having just spent the last hour reading one of the UK national newspapers, I am considering whether there is much to be thankful for?! A father who consistently raped his 2 daughters over a 25yr period. Islamic militants in Mumbai killing over 100, injuring many more, and taking hostages. Cholera in the already devastated land of Zimbabwe, millions displaced in the DRC. Anti-government protestors shutting down a whole airport in Thailand. An 8yr old grieving boy who hangs himself, a 13yr old girl commits suicide because she is “fat and ugly”, and of course the never-ending economic crisis!

I understand that the north American “Thanksgiving” celebrations are related to the end of the harvest season and are about remembering and being thankful, not only for one’s material provision but for spiritual “possessions” as well.
This morning, I can truly say I am overwhelmed, an almost physical feeling of despair haunting the day! Yet I look out of my window as I type, and there in the not so far distance, a Rainbow. A visual reminder of God’s faithfulness, of his promise of MERCY and GRACE. That despite the evil we are surrounded by in this world, God will not, out of the abundance of his loving heart, wipe us out again!
This for some reason astonishes me. I cannot comprehend fully, how and why God would chose to show us such mercy and love. In light of the crisis I read and see around me, I am grateful for at least one thing. The Lord God continues to allow me and many others to experience life, in all its forms!
