God's Economy – Peace on earth

>The governmental response to the economic crisis is rather intriguing. Mainly focusing on consumerism, getting people to spend again, encouraging banks to loan money, thus increasing debt. However, for once they have acted quickly. It seems to me though there is as ever an inconsistency in governments response to crisis. When it involves money they respond. When it is a humanitarian crisis, like that in the DRC, or Nigeria, or Zimbabwe it seems you can’t get them to budge one dot! This I believe truly reveals the values that my government holds. As ever, money is more important?!

You see, nations tend to respond to that which is pertinent to the fabric of their own society or governance. They can chose to ignore, or act with complacency to issues in other countries because it does not immediately affect them.

In the run up to christmas you often here the words first spoken by the angel that appeared to the shepherds after Jesus’ birth, “Peace of Earth”. These words incorporate and perhaps presuppose a global perspective. Not just peace within your immediate circumstance but to the whole world. Perhaps we would do well to consider, during these times, the millions of other people worse off than ourselves. As the most Rev Idris Jones says in his article “Peace on Earth“: “to look beyond their own situations and to respond to the cries for help from across the world.”
