What should Christmas really be about? I don’t think I am the only one asking this question. Just have a chat with a few different people and you can often hear the frustration of this season – the presents, family gatherings, expectations, credit crunch…and the list goes on.

So how did we get to this point? Where December sees our credit cards maxed out, our life become hectic… more of everything! Where the suicide rate increases, arguments explode… is this what we can look forward to?

There is no doubt that Christmas for many is not a time of celebration, something to look forward to. Rather it’s a time of loneliness, frustration, sadness…

Christmas in reality is very different to what it is in truth!

Christmas is…and should be…about Jesus. A time to remember not just a story, but an actual event where God showed his love for this broken world by sending his son Jesus as a vulnerable little baby. A baby that was a king! A baby that was to “save” this world from separation from its creator God.

Jesus is the “reason for this season” as some slogans say. However, if you’re having a bad time of it that doesn’t seem to offer you much hope! Yet, Jesus’ birth is all about hope. It’s all about God the Father loving the world – loving you and me – and giving us a chance at a new life. Not necessarily an easy life, but a new life, where we can live in fellowship with God.

Christmas is a time to show the world there is HOPE. That this season is not just about having to meet the expectations pushed upon you by the media, by materialism, adverts and all that. It’s not about cooking the perfect turkey, or laying on the best christmas day spread.

The next few days I’m gonna take a look at the 4 concepts promoted by the aptly named “Advent Conspiracy”.

4. Love All

Who wants a Christmas worth forgetting? Christmas can still change the world – The story of Christ’s birth is a story of promise, hope, and a revolutionary love.
